In the Northwest

Just returned from traveling around Seattle and Vancouver -- what a beautiful part of the world! It was my first time seeing Vancouver, so we explored Stanley Park, English Bay (shown here), Granville Island, and the neighborhood of Mt. Pleasant, which locals were calling 'the Brooklyn of Vancouver'... and of course, I always love Seattle.

Happy birthday, Gran and Oups!

Calder at OSP

Here's another view of the Calder 'Eagle'.

I just found out an exhibit of Calder jewelry opens at the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach in February -- http://www.norton.org/exhibitions/schedule2008-5.htm. How amazing would it be to own a piece of Calder jewelry?

The jewelry exhibit makes its way to the Metropolitan Museum in December -- http://www.metmuseum.org/special/se_event.asp?OccurrenceId=%7B2447333C-4D1D-4C74-9EED-62134307C209%7D.

Calder at OSP

Another sculptor I really admire is Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976). I've stumbled across his work in the most unexpected places -- the wonderous 'Calder's Circus' at the New York Guggenheim, a downtown street exhibit last year, and a mercury fountain (1937) he gifted Joan Miro, housed at the Miro Foundation in Barcelona (the liquid flowing through it is actually mercury).

Here in Seattle I found 'Eagle'.

I wonder where I'll next find his work?

Seattle Sculpture Park

This week is our favorite new Seattle discovery -- the Olympic Sculpture Garden, an extension of the Seattle Art Museum.

Here is Richard Serra's (American, b. 1939) 'Wake'. The scale of these ships majestic, imposing, and yet graceful overall. You can walk in and around the towering pieces, viewing it from every angle. I missed the MOMA retrospective on his work last year, so I was excited to encounter Serra's work here.

You can find out more about the sculpture garden here --www.seattleartmuseum.org/visit/OSP

Definitely worth a trip if you're in the Seattle area!

Scenes from Seattle

From Portland we moved on to Seattle. Here's a view from the ferry over to Bainbridge Island.
